Submariner Summer 37
Many felicitations unto thee, Namor Nation! We gather for #SubmarinerSummer read through part 37 for another great milestone in the history of our sea prince-a series all his own. Yes, we are finally reading Prince Namor, The Sub-Mariner #1! We are kicked off by a legendary cover
Tumblr media
And on the title page, Destiny gloats about killing Namor! How's *that* for a start to a series? Roy Thomas stays on scripts from Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1, and we have John Buscema going all out on pencils. Frank Giacoia on inks and Sam Rosen on letters round out the team
Tumblr media
Though victorious, Destiny is still filled with hate, so he gloats that this is his second victory. He then uses his mind powers to set Namor's brain to go over his past, so that he will finally remember the lost amnesia memories that apparently hide the first defeat by Destiny
Tumblr media
As a plot device for a flashback issue, not the worst I've seen. So now, Oh ye faithful, thrill to the Silver Age retelling of Namor's origin. It begins with the US explorers led by Captain Leonard McKenzie causing (accidentally) a massive destruction and slaughter in Atlantis
Tumblr media
Emperor Thakorr tells his daughter, Princess Fen, to select warriors to investigate; she says yes, but decides to do it herself. She goes to the surface and among the US expedition; soon, she ends up marrying Captain McKenzie! Weeks later, Thakorr DOES send a war party
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They retrieve Fen and score some casualties on the Americans in the process, notably Captain McKenzie himself, or so Fen thinks, breaking her heart. But that brief love birthed Namor.
Fast forward to the 40s, and Namor rises to the surface, fighting war upon war
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though the wars ended, he fought still, both Atlanteans rivals like Byrrah and surface crime and enemies. Eventually, though, another destruction came to Atlantis seeming to repeat the one that led to Fen going to the surface. So Thakorr sends Namor to perform Fen's old mission
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this was not an accidental genocide by ignorant surfacers: it was Destiny with his Helmet of Power, killing and destroying just to test his abilities. He then uses them to mind control Namor, and forces him to see his Granfather and emperor, and his mother, die with Atlantis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we finally see the cause of the destruction of "First Atlantis" that was alluded to way back in Submariner Summer part 30, covering TtA #96.
But Destiny's not done; he decides to turn Namor into his mind wiped pawn and sends him away while he hibernates one last time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So robbed of his mind and now in New York, Namor flails about a bit at first, before simply beginning to wander without identity or purpose. Y'all...this is nightmare fuel. What a godawful fate, and Destiny basically did it for kicks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is, of course, the state he's in when the Human Torch finds him in the classic Fantastic Four #4, which reintroduced Namor. So now we're basically back at the Silver Age, and Namor's memories are finally complete. This wakes him up from Flashback Land, where he's trapped
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ice melting on his body is the water he needs to recover his strength, and suffused with it he bursts free! And with that freedom, Namor plans to visit his wrath on the man called Destiny...and perhaps the entire surface. IMPERIUS REX!
Tumblr media
Going to be honest, if I had to relive all that trauma all at once and wasn't just broken into a sobbing heap, I could absolutely want to destroy the world too.
But as a reader, what can I say, this was a fun if extremely truncated ride through Namor's history to that point, with some new additions and revelations in the typical Roy Thomas retcon fashion. It focuses on some key events relevant to the greater story, arc but basically this #1 was Namor 101. 👨🏽‍🏫
But NEXT, we get back to then-current events as Namor starts his hunt for revenge against Destiny as we cover Sub-Mariner #2: Cry...TRITON!

Submariner Summer 35
Do Not Go Gentle Into That #SubmarinerSummer part 35, Namor Nation. We are at a key moment, just like last time, just like next time. Momentous things are afoot. This time, we hail the LAST ISSUE of volume 1 of Tales to Astonish, #101! End of the line is a wonderful Hulk in Asgard cover
Tumblr media
Yes, Tales to Astonish ends here; Tales of Suspense ended as well. But more on that next time. Here at the End, we BEGIN a key story in Namor lore, that of the Man Called Destiny. It starts in the Title splash with Namor, sleeping, haunted by a nightmare...or is he?
Tumblr media
We have Archie Goodwin back on scripts, and Gene Colan back on art; nice. Adkins on inks and Simek on letters rounds out the creatives. Also, look at our lil' man sleep. Do you guys think his wings twitch when he's dreaming? I bet they do.
ANYway, the nightmare figure haunts him, taunts him, and apparently has been doing so since his trip to the ruins of Antarctic Atlantis. Thinking it might be a sign of the memories lost in his past amnesia, he sets off for Antartica again to explore if there might be more there
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it isn't a Namor story unless he gets attacked. So, a pilot scared that Namor looks at him funny fires missiles at our Prince in flight; doesn't end well for the pilot or his plane, but Namor spares his life and goes on his way.
Bad.
Ass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the people of Atlantis mourn their city destroyed by a US submarine. They must now wander in search of a place safer from the surface. But, in their own words, as long as the blue skinned race survives, so does Atlantis; strong indigenous coding here for the Atlanteans
Tumblr media
And hell, they may have lost their city but not their fashion sense; Colan beautifully illustrates their sorrow and resolve and Lady Dorma absolutely SERVING here. Can't blame Warlord Seth for catching feelings for her as a new Atlantean tear-filled trail begins 👀
Tumblr media
For his part, the believed-dead Namor reaches Antarctica, and is compelled by he knows not what to follow a route to a hidden cave. And there he finds an ancient civilization and the ruins of their time-lost, frozen city!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, he also finds its icy guardian; or more specifically, it finds him. Namor makes short work of it, though, and it crashes through a wall leading to a fateful chamber...the chamber of A Man Called Destiny!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's the beginning of Namor's fateful clash with Destiny, here at the end of Tales to Astonish. The plot isn't the most sophisticated ever, but hinting at getting answers to Namor's amnesia is compelling, it was great to touch base with Atlantis, and Colan delivers Art™
So NEXT, we will have to see what Destiny holds for Namor, but it will no longer be in Tales to Astonish. She was a good ship, but she sails into the past. Also? It won't be tomorrow, I'm afraid, I shall be otherwise engaged. Lo siento 🙏
So probably Wednesday we shall cover: "Call Him Destiny...Or Call Him Death!"

one day i may sit down and truly analyze why exactly i am so much more compelled by people and characters that have Something Going On with their eyes. matt murdock, cyclops (x-men), claude monet??? and i know there are more but im too tired to think of them. idk maybe i see pieces of myself in them. this strange dichotomy of being a visual artist with a degrading eyesight who worries that one day they may not be able to see at all. maybe im just deeply interested in this whole idea of perception. in studying how we experience the world. whatever. i don’t care.

Rolling Thunder (1977)
"What the fuck are you doing?"
"I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.
#rolling thunder#1977#american cinema#john flynn#paul schrader#heywood gould#william devane#tommy lee jones#linda haynes#lisa blake richards#james best#dabney coleman#luke askew#lawrason driscoll#james victor#cassie yates#jordan gerler#jane abbott#barry de vorzon#charles escamilla#blisteringly good schrader script which is most effective in the dialogue that isn't there: devane's newly released POW is taciturn to the#point of frustration‚ speaking slow deliberate sentences or not at all. crucially tho that never feels like just a 'cool' character trait or#an attempt to craft a terse‚ mysterious protagonist; it's everything you need to know about him and just how fucked up he really is by his#years of imprisonment and torture. he literally cannot express his emotions or fears or pain; if he could maybe the whole film would go#down differently‚ but Maj. Rane is a man trapped in the burning silence of his own coiled trauma. there's a fascinating study of ptsd in#here somewhere‚ carefully folded underneath a violent revenge thriller; that more mainstream aspect is still well drawn‚ nowhere moreso#than the film's lengthy (and of course almost wordless) bloody final scenes. the violence there is comparable to true exploitation cinema#but through careful buildup and developed strain it doesn't feel unearned. it's the natural destination that this path of unhealing hurt#would lead. fascinating film and fascinating performances‚ from devane but also from a young TLJ in a superb support as the only man who's#been through the same hell and thus understands Rane completely without ever having to vocalise a thing
